Retro Aliens

So, these are an assignment for Character Design - we basically had to come up with 8 Characters that had a story behind them with a chosen theme. So, my chosen theme (from the teacher's list) was Alien Sprawl and Brave New World. These little aliens are confused aliens from a planet about 40 light-years away who are vaguely humanlike. They know we exist, and want to be like us, but their only form of correspondence from us is radio and TV waves from the 70s that they picked up. So, getting ready to come to our planet, they deck themselves out in garbled versions of what they think we will think is "cool," and gave themselves "earth names" of famous 70s icons. so here goes (Click to enlarge):

Barbra

Karen

Donny

Farrah (couldn't help myself)

Dusty

Marie

Cher

And those are their character sheets and height charts. I guess I just felt like being silly when I made these - good not to take ourselves too seriously, right?

Conshepts

Here is my project I've been working on for illustration concepts - they're modified doll forms - all patterned and sewed and hand-beaded and embroidered by yours truly! (with the enormous help of the lovely Matt Reading.)

She's lookin' at YOU!

The latter image is actually the first one I made - I know it's kind of creepy, but that was the intention. These are just meant to be fun/silly/sometimes creepy toys for adults - like "uglydolls," but weirder and prettier at the same time.

This one's flannel, pleather and glass beads. The first one pictured is flannel, (hand-pleated) silk organza and glass beads. They're both hand-embroidered as well. They're stuffed with poly-fill with armature wire inside the arms and legs to maintain the pose.

They're buddies :) They don't really have names yet - it's tentatively Sally and Pat. Any suggestions for names?

Also - these are still works-in-progress so any comments or things I should add would be greatly appreciated.

More Characters!

This is another assignment for character design - we had to go somewhere and caricature people, then turn those people into characters.  So, I went to the Starbucks on charles st. These were the characters I got!

Girl with tiny shorts

Guy with beer belly

Guy with Blackberry

Guy with skinny jeans

Guy with big curly hair.

Soooooosan

This here is Susan. She has been popping up a lot in my assignments lately :) I think she's kind of cute - everyone else seems to think that she's really creepy. Oh well!

For this assignment, we had to come up with a character and draw the bones and musculature.

I think of her as one of those humans from Wall-E, just instead of fat she's all muscle and has also evolved with a very long neck :)

New figure sculpture stuff!

This is a bas-relief we did :)

This is a two-week portrait.

POSTER DESIGN YOU

UPDATE: PROJECT FINISHED!

Sorry for the terrible Soviet Russia joke, I couldn't help myself.

In any case, this is a series of travel posters for St. Petersburg, Russia. I know this looks more like graphic design than illustration, but I have been having a kind of strange graphic design sensibility lately. As in, if given the chance to do something simple instead of complex, i'll choose simple and understated.

Anyways, I have the intended six posters:

The silhouettes of the statues are all various historic landmarks in St. Petersburg in this order: St. Peter himself, memorial to the siege of Leningrad, Mother Motherland Statue, Alexander Column, Nicholas I monument, and Alexander III Monument.

Fine Arts

Here's some silliness I did from last semester's Fine Art Illustration class.

These are all model drawings or paintings from class.

This was a homework assignment that was "your reaction to a song." I did a reaction to Weather Report's "Black Market."

More!

Here's another assignment for Character design - a Fly in a hospital. Prompt generated from this site! It's got tons of character and scene inspiration prompts.

Poor little fly guy. He's drawn in pencil and colored in photoshop.

Also, here's a silly poster I designed for MICArotica's upcoming issue (which all MICA students should submit to, by the way!!!!)

It's just a little quick thing - flexing my fledgling graphic design skills.

Woo!

Mo' Demons

Soooo here are the other two characters in my four-part character assignment! (first post here.)

This is the Demon of downloading music illegally (Also known as the free-music succubus :D)

And this guy is the demon of double-dipping and sticking your fingers in other peoples' food... hehe.

Again, these are all drawn in graphite, then scanned and colored in photoshop (starting to see a pattern here?)

Here's their character sheet all together for size reference:

Moooore

Another photo from the Langham hotel in Pasadena. I like this one cause the negative got crinkled, and it kind of looks like an old postcard or something. Looks almost too perfect to be real.
