More Character Designs

These are a series of characters that are basically our generation 50-60 years in the future, as big kids that never really grew up/out of things that were trendy in their '20s. They meet in an online chatroom and decide to go on a cross-country motorhome trip while they're still relatively healthy. So, without further ado:

Kyle O'Connor : Kandi Kid raver. Lives with his boyfriend Trent in rural Connecticut. Likes to get together with friends and have old-school rave parties.

Mariah West: Ex-hardcore porn star and current owner of a huge pornography and fetish equipment company. Lives with husband in New York City, has 5 kids, none of whom followed in her footsteps.

Nicole Dominguez, "Nikki": Venezuelan immigrant working various retail jobs in Camden, NJ. An ex-juggalette and bodymodder - she covered most of her limbs with scarification "tribal" tattoos.

Corey Hardis: Tattoo-happy ex-straight edge kid living in Nashville, TN. Is now a bitter old alcoholic. His secret: Appears to be vain about his hair. But, in his youth he tried out the skinhead thing for a few years, got a skinhead tattoo on his head, and now is deathly afraid that he'll go bald and everyone will see it.

Beasts

I'm sorry for the updating drought - life has been happening. No excuses!
Here's a bunch of stuff I have made for my character design class this semester!

a series of 3 beasts and their "owners."

a "Moga," a.k.a. Japanese flapper girl.

These 2 guys were part of an ongoing group project - a fictional comic book thriller, called "Wendigo," where a group of characters get stranded in wintry minnesota by a train crash, lost style. My two characters, "Lawrence Stuggs" and "Amos" are, in succession, the hysterical train conductor and the drunk train-hopper.

Interior of the kitchen after the crash.

Cover for a volume of the comic.

2 "creatures."

These have been fun! I'll be posting more soon.

Retro Aliens

So, these are an assignment for Character Design - we basically had to come up with 8 Characters that had a story behind them with a chosen theme. So, my chosen theme (from the teacher's list) was Alien Sprawl and Brave New World. These little aliens are confused aliens from a planet about 40 light-years away who are vaguely humanlike. They know we exist, and want to be like us, but their only form of correspondence from us is radio and TV waves from the 70s that they picked up. So, getting ready to come to our planet, they deck themselves out in garbled versions of what they think we will think is "cool," and gave themselves "earth names" of famous 70s icons. so here goes (Click to enlarge):

Barbra

Karen

Donny

Farrah (couldn't help myself)

Dusty

Marie

Cher

And those are their character sheets and height charts. I guess I just felt like being silly when I made these - good not to take ourselves too seriously, right?

POSTER DESIGN YOU

UPDATE: PROJECT FINISHED!

Sorry for the terrible Soviet Russia joke, I couldn't help myself.

In any case, this is a series of travel posters for St. Petersburg, Russia. I know this looks more like graphic design than illustration, but I have been having a kind of strange graphic design sensibility lately. As in, if given the chance to do something simple instead of complex, i'll choose simple and understated.

Anyways, I have the intended six posters:

The silhouettes of the statues are all various historic landmarks in St. Petersburg in this order: St. Peter himself, memorial to the siege of Leningrad, Mother Motherland Statue, Alexander Column, Nicholas I monument, and Alexander III Monument.

More!

Here's another assignment for Character design - a Fly in a hospital. Prompt generated from this site! It's got tons of character and scene inspiration prompts.

Poor little fly guy. He's drawn in pencil and colored in photoshop.

Also, here's a silly poster I designed for MICArotica's upcoming issue (which all MICA students should submit to, by the way!!!!)

It's just a little quick thing - flexing my fledgling graphic design skills.

Mo' Demons

Soooo here are the other two characters in my four-part character assignment! (first post here.)

This is the Demon of downloading music illegally (Also known as the free-music succubus :D)

And this guy is the demon of double-dipping and sticking your fingers in other peoples' food... hehe.

Again, these are all drawn in graphite, then scanned and colored in photoshop (starting to see a pattern here?)

Here's their character sheet all together for size reference:

Deeeeemons.

These are two works-in-progress-almost-done for a 4-part assignment for character design!

The backstory behind this is: My characters are d-list demons of very minor crimes and irritating things.

So, this guy is the demon who possesses guys to act like "the situation" From the Jersey shore:

(ugh - Blogger killed my colors a little bit - but it's still basically the same!)
(Also the Ab Window shirt exists!)

This second guy is the demon that possesses people to watch porn in the public library (yes, this happens):

Yeaaaaa! To come are the free-music succubus (the demon that possesses people to illegally download music) and the demon that possesses people to double-dip and stick their fingers in food. (Yuck!)

This class is my first real foray into real character design!

These are all done in graphite then scanned into photoshop and colored.

ROOM

Here's another assignment for Illustration Concepts II! The assignment was to redesign a book cover and trade sketches with another student, so you're bringing another student's rough to a finish.

The book I redesigned is called ROOM.

yey! It's a pencil drawing scanned and colored in photoshop.

Conshepts II

Heeeeere is my first Assignment for Concepts 2! The assignment was do do a cover and three spots for the article "The New Monogamy" in Psychotherapy Networker.

Spread:

Spot 1:

Spot 2:

These are drawn in pencil and colored digitally :)
I didn't include the third spot because it kind of needs to be re-done first.

wooooo

Here are some projects from Illustration concepts:

This project was to redesign a cover for any band... So I chose the band Weather Report, and their album Black Market. This one's entirely photoshop.

This one was just some silliness that I did after the constitution day lecture. It was a panel on gay marriage with Sharon Hayes, Dan Savage and Dr. Kendall Thomas. I think this piece pretty much sums up what I thought of the panel.

This is an ad campaign for Converse. 'nuff said. Graphite and photoshop!

These were illustrations (one cover, 2 spot) for an article on the NYTimes book review for the book "freedom" by Jonathan Franzen. This was the very first assignment of the year I did - don't judge me! This one's all graphite.

This one's a cover redesign for the game "Goldeneye." All photoshop!

And lastly, this one was a cover for an article called "Is America Islamophobic?"
graphite and watercolor, collaged in photoshop.

pheeeeeeeeew! lots of stuff!

Update Tiem.

Sorry for being such a sloth all year (all 2.5 months of it... pff). My My, I can't believe the semester has gone so fast.

That said, here's some work from Fine Art Illustration:

These are a CD cover package redesign for the band CAKE. The album is called "B-Sides and Rarities." (heh. heh. get it?) They're both drawings in graphite, scanned in and colored in photoshop.

This is an editorial piece for the article called "whitewash in wartime" (you can read the article here)
It's basically about government propaganda during wartime, and how they manipulate the thinking of the public by being selective in their portrayals in the media.
the line drawing was done in graphite, then scanned and colored in photoshop.

Next post Illustration concepts!
